Stenographer Grade-III Exam Pattern
Stage-I — Written Examination
| Particulars | Details |
|---|---|

| Question Type | Objective multiple-choice questions |
| Total Questions | 100 |
| Maximum Marks | 100; one mark per correct answer |
| Exam Duration | 90 minutes |
| Subjects | Hindi, English, General Studies and Mathematics |
| Negative Marking | No |
The advertisement lists the four subjects but does not prescribe a fixed subject-wise question or mark split. Questions were to match the areas and level described by the essential qualifications.
Stage-II Part A — Computer Typing Test
| Test | Required net speed | Marks | Duration | Minimum qualifying marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hindi Typing | 25 WPM | 25 | 10 minutes | 10 out of 25 |
| English Typing | 30 WPM | 25 | 10 minutes | 10 out of 25 |
- Hindi typing uses the Inscript keyboard layout with Mangal font, as prescribed in the advertisement.
- The notice describes an approximately 250-word Hindi passage and an approximately 300-word English passage, each typed within the relevant 10-minute test.
- Net typing speed is based on correct words typed and time taken. The candidate must meet the net speed as well as the minimum marks in both tests.
Stage-II Part B — Stenography Test
| Language | Shorthand speed | Dictation | Transcription time | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hindi | 80 WPM | Approximately 400 words in 5 minutes | 30 minutes | 50 |
| English | 100 WPM | Approximately 500 words in 5 minutes | 30 minutes | 50 |
For the chosen medium, candidates take dictation in shorthand and transcribe it on a computer within the stated time. Errors reduce marks: the advertisement assigns 0.125 mark for each Hindi stenography error and 0.100 mark for each English stenography error. Left-out words and spelling mistakes count as full errors; paragraphing and punctuation errors count as half errors. Net speed is assessed using correct words reproduced within the allotted time.
Typing error deductions are also specified: each English typing error deducts 0.0833 mark and each Hindi typing error deducts 0.100 mark. Left-out words, spelling mistakes and punctuation errors count as full errors; extra words are deleted/ignored. Follow the detailed official marking instructions for the exact treatment of any error.

- Group C: prepare core written subjects around Intermediate-level foundations and include clerical arithmetic and relevant Junior Assistant/Amin knowledge where applicable.
- Group D: build strong school-level fundamentals at the level appropriate to the specific post’s essential qualification. Stage-II uses the same four written subjects in a second paper.
E. Hindi Typing Preparation
- Target at least 25 net WPM; practise on the Inscript layout with Mangal font.
- Build accuracy before speed. Watch for matra placement, half-letters, conjuncts, spacing, punctuation, omitted words and spelling.
- Net speed is based on correct words and elapsed time; practise timed passages for 10 minutes and review every error.
- Use a keyboard map and repeat common Hindi word patterns until the layout becomes automatic.
F. English Typing Preparation
- Target at least 30 net WPM. Practise common office vocabulary, capitalization, punctuation and paragraph breaks.
- Use timed passages and track both gross speed and error-free net speed. Reduce backspacing and avoid adding words not present in the passage.
- Review spelling, skipped words, repeated words and punctuation. The notification does not prescribe a special English keyboard layout.
G. Hindi Stenography Preparation
- Build shorthand speed gradually to 80 WPM and practise dictation in five-minute blocks.
- Transcribe within the prescribed time, then compare against the passage to identify omitted words, spelling issues, punctuation and paragraphing.
- Keep a personal list of difficult legal and administrative vocabulary; repeat dictation/transcription sets to improve accuracy and reduce errors.
H. English Stenography Preparation
- Build to 100 WPM through progressive dictation drills, then move to full five-minute practice.
- Improve vocabulary, spelling and punctuation accuracy during transcription; shorthand outlines must remain readable under speed.
- Measure net correct words and use error logs to address omissions, wrong outlines and weak phrase joins.
Concise Preparation Strategy
- Stenographer: balance the four written subjects with daily Hindi/English typing and medium-specific shorthand dictation/transcription practice.
- Group C: study language, general studies and arithmetic daily; maintain separate timed practice for Hindi and English typing with error review.
- Group D: revise school-level concepts across all four subjects, solve OMR-style practice sets, and treat Stage-II as a separate full written paper.
